Ketchum
Ketchum, Idaho is a Rocky Mountain town in Blaine County, Idaho. Founded during a local mining boom in the late 1800s, Ketchum was named after a local guide and trapper, David Ketchum, and provided a supply base for the miners. Ketchum later became a livestock center for ranchers and farmers, and since has grown to be a lovely and thriving center for both locals and tourists to meet and spend time in their pursuits. A favorite location of famous author Ernest Hemingway, Ketchum and its surroundings blend majestic, natural sights with a vibrant and exciting downtown: a fusion of the traditional and the new. There are many ways to enjoy the outdoors in and near Ketchum, which draw many of Ketchum’s visitors throughout the year. Possibly the best-known activity available in the area is skiing, due to Ketchum’s proximity to many different ski trails and resorts. However, in addition to skiing, the Rocky Mountains around Ketchum offer a wide variety of hiking and biking trails as well, including places for offroading and horseback riding. With the slogan “small town, big life,” Ketchum itself provides not only great places to lodge and many different places to eat, but also a number of cultural sites. These include art galleries and year-round cultural events of several kinds; tours of historic sites; Wagon Days, a celebration of Old West and Pioneer wagon trains on Labor Day; Jazz, film, and bike festivals; and the famous annual Trailing of the Sheep, when a parade is held as flocks are moved to their new grazing grounds for the winter.
